Le titre \u00ab\u00a0Holzwege\u00a0\u00bb est aussi celui d\u2019un essai philosophique de Martin Heidegger (1949) qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 traduit en fran\u00e7ais par \u00ab\u00a0Chemins qui ne m\u00e8nent nulle part\u00a0\u00bb, ce qui montre \u00e0 quel point la traduction est un art difficile. En allemand ce mot (Holz=bois, Wege=chemins) d\u00e9signe les chemins forestiers que les b\u00fbcherons empruntent pour extraire le bois coup\u00e9 de la for\u00eat, et donc, pris en sens inverse, ces chemins ne m\u00e8nent vraiment nulle part. Que de mots pour en traduire un seul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il m\u2019est venu \u00e0 l\u2019esprit alors que j\u2019examinai un scarab\u00e9e \u00e9gyptien, cette bestiole qui pousse devant elle le disque solaire… comme le bousier d\u00e9place sa boulette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Car les anciens \u00c9gyptiens croyaient que ce col\u00e9opt\u00e8re (Scarabaeus sacer) faisait rena\u00eetre le Soleil chaque matin, le roulait devant lui au-dessus de l\u2019horizon et l\u2019emportait dans l\u2019autre monde, la nuit, pour ne le ramener qu\u2019au matin suivant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ils le nommaient Kh\u00e9pri, ou Kheper, mot qui signifie aussi (selon cette logique) \u00ab\u00a0venir \u00e0 l’existence\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or, en allemand, scarab\u00e9e se dit K\u00e4fer. C\u2019est aussi le surnom de la petite automobile que nous appelons \u00ab\u00a0coccinelle\u00a0\u00bb. On reste dans les col\u00e9opt\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kheper, K\u00e4fer, y aurait-il une parent\u00e9 entre ces mots? L\u2019allemand s\u2019inspirerait-il de l\u2019\u00e9gyptien ancien? Et puis on peut aussi les rapprocher du mot fran\u00e7ais \u00ab\u00a0cafard\u00a0\u00bb, une autre bestiole…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Du coup, je me suis pench\u00e9 sur l\u2019\u00e9tymologie de ces trois mots. R\u00e9sultat: il n’y a absolument rien de commun entre leurs origines. Rat\u00e9. Encore une curiosit\u00e9 qui ne m\u00e8ne \u00e0 rien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bon, je n\u2019aurai donc trouv\u00e9 qu\u2019un seul mot qui nous soit directement parvenu de l\u2019Egypte ancienne: \u00e9b\u00e8ne, ce bois que les artisans \u00e9gyptiens employaient pour confectionner de petits objets pr\u00e9cieux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
